Understanding your PSA levels within the context of your overall health is vital. Always discuss your PSA test results with your healthcare provider to determin the best course of action tailored to your needs.

The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test is the most commonly used screening tool for prostate cancer. This simple blood test measures the amount of PSA circulating in your bloodstream. Typically, the PSA test is the first step in diagnosing prostate cancer. However, it’s important to note that a PSA test alone cannot confirm the presence of cancer.

PSA is a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland that helps keep semen in liquid form, allowing sperm to swim freely. The PSA test measures the level of this protein in your bloodstream. In almost all cases of prostate cancer, PSA levels rise, making the PSA test a valuable tool for early detection.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all “normal” PSA level. While elevated PSA levels can be one of the earliest signs of prostate cancer, several factors influence your PSA score, including age, race, nationality, recent activities, medications, and other health conditions affecting prostate health. It’s possible to have a high PSA level and not have cancer, and conversely, to have cancer with a lower-than-average PSA score.
